PUMA ULTRA 7: Inside The Campus Experience
A few days in Portugal, some of the most exciting young talents in football and our first hands on experience with the new PUMA ULTRA 7. More than a product launch, this was a look inside the environment where elite performance is built.
Before talking about the new PUMA ULTRA 7 itself, it is worth talking about where we discovered it. Hosted by PUMA Football at The Campus in Quinta do Lago, Portugal, we spent several days immersed in an environment specifically designed to help athletes perform at the highest possible level. From the training facilities to the recovery areas, from nutrition to accommodation, every detail reflected the standards of modern professional football.
What made the experience particularly interesting was the opportunity to share the week with a group of highly talented young players, all invited to test and experience the new generation of ULTRA before its official launch. Seeing how different athletes reacted to the same product, comparing feedback and discussing performance gave us a perspective that goes far beyond a traditional boot launch event.
The Campus itself deserves special mention. Located in one of the most exclusive areas of the Algarve, it combines elite sporting infrastructure with an environment that genuinely encourages development and performance. It quickly became clear why so many professional athletes choose to prepare, recover and train there throughout the year. For a football boot built around speed and modern performance, it felt like the perfect stage.
Of course, the main attraction was always going to be the ULTRA 7. After spending time with both the PUMA development team and the players involved in the project, we were able to build an early understanding of where this new generation is heading. The first impression is simple: this is not a radical reinvention of ULTRA, but a carefully considered evolution that improves several areas that players had been asking about.
The fit immediately feels more accommodating than previous generations. While ULTRA has always been associated with lightweight speed, earlier versions occasionally prioritised minimalism over comfort. ULTRA 7 feels different. The upper is softer, the fit feels more natural and the overall sensation is considerably more forgiving without sacrificing the speed focused identity that defines the silo.
One of the most noticeable updates comes underneath. PUMA has revised the soleplate configuration, removing the rear stud that characterised previous generations. On paper this may seem like a small detail, but on pitch the result is a setup that feels more balanced and confidence inspiring. It still delivers the aggressive traction expected from a speed boot while creating a smoother overall sensation during movement.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the entire trip, however, was the laceless version. We know many players were wondering whether a laceless ULTRA would return and, if we are honest, we initially approached the idea with some scepticism. A football boot carrying such high expectations introducing a laceless option felt like a risky move. Yet after testing both versions extensively and speaking with players who spent several days wearing them, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
The traditional laced model continues to deliver that familiar sense of lockdown, stability and connection that many players associate with ULTRA. The laceless version, meanwhile, offers a completely different experience. It remains secure through the key lockdown zones while providing a level of comfort and freedom that genuinely exceeded our expectations. Rather than feeling like a compromise, it feels like a legitimate alternative that many players may ultimately prefer.
There is still much more to discover about the ULTRA 7 and we will be spending considerably more time with both versions over the coming weeks. Detailed testing, match use and long term impressions will ultimately determine where it stands within the increasingly competitive speed boot category. But after our first experience in Portugal, one thing already feels clear: PUMA has taken another meaningful step forward with the ULTRA franchise.
Sometimes product launches are just about the product. This one was different. The boot mattered, of course, but so did the environment, the conversations, the athletes and the opportunity to understand the context in which modern football products are created. That is what made The Campus experience memorable and why the ULTRA 7 has immediately become one of the most interesting boots to watch heading into the new season.
